Levi came across the coin at the large camp of Auschwitz after the liberation of the Monowitz camp. What followed was an autobiographical account. One side of which was emblazoned with the Star of David. Entitled “The King of the Jews” it was accompanied by an illustration of both sides of a light alloy coin. On 20 November 1977, the newspaper “La Stampa” published a text by Primo Levi at the bottom of a page in its Arts and Culture section.
